A gluten-free diet may be more likely to have deficiencies in nutrients such as B-vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, iron, folate and fiber, substantially higher fat and sugar levels, and increased levels of toxins such as arsenic, and is not recommended for healthy children, according to a commentary in the Journal of Pediatrics. Author Dr. Norelle Reilly said physicians should make parents aware of the "possible financial, social, and nutritional consequences of unnecessary implementation of a gluten-free diet."
