A gluten-free diet may be more likely to have deficiencies in nutrients such as B-vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, iron, folate and fiber, substantially higher fat and sugar levels, and increased levels of toxins such as arsenic, and is not recommended for healthy children, according to a commentary in the Journal of Pediatrics. Author Dr. Norelle Reilly said physicians should make parents aware of the "possible financial, social, and nutritional consequences of unnecessary implementation of a gluten-free diet."

Snack Regulations could be a burden for schools


Regulations released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding school snacks are "complex" and could be a burden for schools, said Sandra Ford, president of the School Nutrition Association. Schools already are working to align their menus with new regulations for breakfast and lunch, she noted. The standards set calorie limits for food and drinks sold on school campuses during the day, including in vending machines
