A gluten-free diet may be more
likely to have deficiencies in nutrients such as B-vitamins, vitamin D,
magnesium, calcium, iron, folate and fiber, substantially higher fat and sugar
levels, and increased levels of toxins such as arsenic, and is not recommended
for healthy children, according to a commentary in the Journal of Pediatrics. Author
Dr. Norelle Reilly said physicians should make parents aware of the
"possible financial, social, and nutritional consequences of unnecessary
implementation of a gluten-free diet."
